Dashboard

The Dashboard lists every domain of every workspace you belong to, worst first, with its problems and one status dot per module.

View as Markdown

The Dashboard is the first page you see after you sign in. It shows every domain of every workspace you belong to, one row for each domain. The worst domains are at the top, so you can see which site needs you today.

Before you start

  • The Dashboard is at /dashboard.
  • Every role sees the Dashboard: owner, admin and member. A member sees the same rows, but cannot add a domain. See Members.
  • The Dashboard has no settings of its own. To change what a domain monitors, open the domain. See Domain overview.

Summary figures

The top of the Dashboard shows three figures for all your domains together:

FigureWhat it counts
DomainsEvery domain of every workspace you belong to.
With criticalDomains with a critical problem in at least one module, or domains that the VitalSentinel crawler cannot reach.
With warningsDomains with at least one module that needs a look.

A domain with a critical problem and a warning counts under With critical and also under With warnings.

Status groups on the Dashboard

The Dashboard puts each domain into one of four status groups. The groups always show in this order. Each group heading shows the number of domains in it. The Healthy group has no heading. Its domains show after the Need a look group:

GroupWhen a domain is in it
CriticalAt least one module has a critical problem, or the VitalSentinel crawler cannot reach the site.
Need a lookAt least one module needs attention, and no module is critical.
HealthyThe domain is verified, at least three modules measured data, and all of them are fine.
No data yetThe domain does not have enough data to be called healthy.

A domain that the crawler cannot reach is always Critical, whatever its modules show. To learn how to fix a blocked crawler, see Troubleshooting.

Domain row

Each row of the Dashboard has three parts: the domain, what is wrong, and the module statuses.

Domain name and workspace

The row starts with the favicon and the name of the domain. Click the name to open the domain Overview. If you belong to more than one workspace, the workspace name shows below the domain name.

If some data sources are not connected, the row shows a count such as 2 of 4 connected. The sources are the RUM and Web Analytics scripts, Google Search Console and server logs. Open the domain and use Set up more to connect the others. See Connect your data.

Problems

The middle of the row names the worst problems of the domain in plain words, up to three. If there are more, a link such as 2 more problems opens the domain Overview. Click a problem to open the page where you fix it.

A healthy domain shows nothing here. A domain without data shows the chip No data yet. A domain that you did not verify shows the chip Not verified. See Verify ownership.

Module status dots

The right side of the row shows one dot for each module, such as Uptime Monitoring or Google Search Console. Hover over a dot to read the module name and the reason for its status. On a small screen, each dot shows the module icon.

DotMeaning
Large red circle with an iconCritical
Large amber circle with an iconNeeds attention
Small green dotGood
Grey dotNot judged yet: the module has no data to judge.
Empty ringNot set up
Bell with a line through itMuted: you muted all the problems of this module.

If you did not verify the domain, every dot of a module without data says Waits for verification. VitalSentinel does not check or collect anything for a domain that is not verified.

Click a red or amber dot to open a small panel. The panel explains the problem and has these actions:

  • Open followed by the module name, for example Open Uptime Monitoring, opens the module page.
  • Stop flagging this mutes the problem. A muted problem does not make the dot or the row red or amber. Some problems cannot be muted, for example a site that is down or a source that stopped sending data.
  • Unmute shows the problem again.

To see all muted problems, go to Account > Notifications > Muted status dots. See Notifications.

Banners on the Dashboard

Banners show above the domain list when something needs your attention.

Google account authentication required

The red banner Google account authentication required shows when a connected Google account stopped working. Only owners and admins of the workspace see it, because members cannot reconnect accounts. It names each account and its workspace, for example "Your Google account name@example.com in workspace Acme needs re-authentication."

Click Re-authenticate in followed by the workspace name. The link opens the Integrations page of that workspace. While the account is not connected, Google Search Console and Indexing Monitoring data stop updating.

Workspace invitations

If somebody invited you to a workspace, a banner shows "You've been invited to join" with the workspace name, who invited you, and your role.

  • Click Accept to join the workspace. Its domains then show on the Dashboard.
  • Click Decline and confirm to refuse the invitation.

Site setup to review

The banner Site setup for followed by the domain name and is ready to review shows when VitalSentinel proposes brand terms or site sections for a domain. Only owners and admins see it. The Dashboard has one banner for each domain and shows one banner at a time. Click Review brand terms or Review site sections to open the domain settings. See Domain settings.

Date range

The filter bar at the bottom of the Dashboard sets the date range. The presets are the last 7 days, 28 days, 30 days, 90 days and 12 months. The Dashboard always opens on the last 28 days. A range that you select applies only to the current visit. You can also select your own dates in the calendar and click Apply.

The date range ends yesterday, in UTC. When you change the range, VitalSentinel judges the module statuses again for the new dates. The Dashboard shows statuses, not changes, so it has no compare option. For more about the filter bar, see Using the app.

Add a domain

The Add a domain button is at the top right of the Dashboard. Only owners and admins see it. The domain limit of each workspace depends on its plan. See Billing.

  1. Click Add a domain.
  2. Follow the steps of the setup flow.

For the full steps, see Add a domain.

Empty Dashboard

If no domain exists yet, the Dashboard shows Welcome to VitalSentinel! and the button Add your first domain.

If you are a member, the Dashboard says "There is no domain to show yet. Ask an owner or admin of your workspace to add one."

If the domain list cannot load, the Dashboard shows Couldn't load your dashboard and the button Try again.

Troubleshooting

Why is my domain in No data yet?

A domain is Healthy only when it is verified and at least three modules measured data. If the domain is new, wait for the first data. If the row shows Not verified, verify the domain. If the row shows a count such as 1 of 4 connected, connect more sources.

Why is my domain Critical when all modules look fine?

If the VitalSentinel crawler cannot reach your site, the domain is always Critical. Open the domain and read the red banner. Allow the VitalSentinel crawler in your firewall or CDN. See Monitoring IPs.

Why do I not see the Add a domain button?

If you are a member of the workspace, you cannot add domains. Ask an owner or admin to add the domain, or to make you an admin. The button also does not show while the Dashboard loads.

Why did a red dot turn green after I clicked Stop flagging this?

Stop flagging this mutes the problem, so it no longer counts in the status. To show it again, click the dot and click Unmute, or go to Account > Notifications > Muted status dots.

Why do I see a domain from another workspace?

The Dashboard shows the domains of all workspaces you belong to. The workspace name shows below each domain name when you belong to more than one workspace.
