Overview

The domain Overview shows one verdict for your site, then a tile with the key numbers of every module that you set up.

View as Markdown

The domain Overview shows your whole site on one page. A line at the top tells you if anything needs your attention. Below it, each module that you set up has a tile with its key numbers.

Before you start

  • To open the Overview, select a domain, then click Overview at the top of the Domain group in the sidebar.
  • Every role can open the Overview. Members see the same tiles as owners and admins, but members cannot connect a module. See Members.
  • A domain must be verified before VitalSentinel monitors it. See Verify ownership.

What the Overview shows

The Overview has these parts, from top to bottom:

  1. The domain verdict: one headline and one line about the health of the site.
  2. A red banner, if a firewall blocks the VitalSentinel crawler.
  3. The Your site setup is ready to review notice, if Theo has proposals for your site setup.
  4. The module tiles, in four groups: Site checks, Search & traffic, Crawling & availability and Web performance.
  5. The Set up more card, with the modules that you did not set up yet.

The domain name shows next to the Overview title. The filter bar at the bottom of the page sets the date range and the comparison for all tiles. See Using the app.

Domain verdict

The verdict at the top of the Overview tells you, in plain words, if a module needs your attention. VitalSentinel builds it from the status of each module tile. It does not use AI.

Verdict headlines

HeadlineMeaning
Everything looks healthyEvery module that has data is within range.
No problems found so farFewer than four modules have data, and they are all within range. The line names these modules.
Nothing to judge yetNo module has data yet.
<Module> needs attentionOne module has a problem.
N modules need attentionMore than one module has a problem.

When there are problems, the line under the headline names the first two. For example: "RUM Monitoring: LCP is 4.2s on Phone." If there are more, the line ends with "And N more."

Which problem comes first

A site that is down, or an SSL certificate or domain that expires soon, always becomes the headline. The verdict names critical problems before warnings. Problems with the same severity follow this order:

  1. RUM Monitoring
  2. Server Log Monitoring
  3. Google Search Console
  4. Indexing Monitoring
  5. Site Health Monitoring
  6. Page Monitoring
  7. Web Analytics
  8. CrUX Monitoring
  9. Synthetic Monitoring
  10. Robots.txt Monitoring
  11. Sitemap Monitoring
  12. Uptime Monitoring

The button next to the verdict opens the module with the first problem, for example Open RUM Monitoring. If no module has a problem but Site Health Monitoring has open issues, the button is Open Site Health Monitoring.

How the verdict judges a module

Click the ? next to the verdict to see How this is judged:

  • Core Web Vitals: Google limits.
  • Indexing: share of the sitemap that Google indexed.
  • Visitors and clicks: change against the comparison period.
  • Uptime: the site is up.

Each module uses the same limits as its tile. A module with no data does not count. A big fall in clicks, visitors or indexed pages counts only when the period before had enough traffic. A small site does not get a warning for a small number of visits.

Module tiles

Each module that you set up has one tile in its group. A group shows only when at least one of its modules has a tile. The groups follow the sidebar:

GroupModules
Site checksSite Health Monitoring, Page Monitoring
Search & trafficGoogle Search Console, Indexing Monitoring, Web Analytics
Crawling & availabilityServer Log Monitoring, Sitemap Monitoring, Robots.txt Monitoring, Uptime Monitoring
Web performanceRUM Monitoring, CrUX Monitoring, Synthetic Monitoring

Parts of a tile

Each tile has these parts:

  • The module name. Click the ? next to it to read what the module does.
  • A status chip, for example Good, Minor issues, Needs attention, Critical or No data. A tile does not show Good next to a problem. The Robots.txt Monitoring, Sitemap Monitoring, Indexing Monitoring and Synthetic Monitoring tiles show Minor issues if the module has open issues or a red or amber number.
  • View, which opens the module page with the full detail.
  • The key numbers of the module. Hover the ? of a number to read what it means.

If Compare is on in the filter bar, each number also shows its change against the comparison period. If you turn Compare off, the changes disappear. The verdict and the chips always compare with the previous period, so they do not change.

Numbers on each tile (Site checks and Search & traffic)

Tile states

A module tile does not always show numbers. These are the other states of a tile on the Overview.

Waiting for the first data

The module is connected, but its first data did not arrive yet. The tile shows a waiting state. If the first data is later than usual, the chip shows Later than usual and the tile says "First data is later than usual. Open it to check the setup."

No data in the date range

The module is connected, but it has no data in the selected dates. The tile shows No data yet. Some modules show a more specific text:

  • Robots.txt Monitoring: No file yet.
  • CrUX Monitoring: Google has no CrUX data, when Google publishes no data for your site.
  • Synthetic Monitoring: First test today, with the time and the Phone score. The test joins the charts the next day.
  • Any module: First data today, when the first data came in today.

Needs attention

The chip shows Needs attention when the data source of a module stopped. A notice in the tile says what stopped and since when. Owners and admins see a button that opens the fix. The numbers lose their colors, because VitalSentinel does not judge a module on old data.

Waits for verification

If the domain is not verified, or monitoring is paused, each tile shows Waits for verification. Nothing runs before verification.

Domain not verified

If you never verified the domain, the Overview shows only the verification and the list of modules. The filter bar and the tiles do not show.

  • Owners and admins see the Verify your domain card with the verification steps. VitalSentinel checks automatically. See Verify ownership.
  • Members see Domain not verified and the text "Monitoring starts once an owner or admin verifies it".

Set up more

The Set up more card lists each module that you did not set up for this domain. Each row says what the module would show for your site. For example: "See which pages of example.com Google has indexed, and why the others are not."

Each row has a button, for example Connect Google Search Console, Install the script, Link a property or Connect server logs. The button opens the setup panel on the same page. Each module that you connect adds a tile.

If no module has data yet, the card shows first, with the title Set up your first sources. Members cannot connect modules, so for them the card has the title Not connected.

Other notices on the Overview

Crawler blocked banner

A firewall can answer the VitalSentinel crawler with a 403 error. Then a red banner names the blocked modules. For example: "Uptime Monitoring is blocked (403)." If Sitemap Monitoring is blocked, the banner also says that Indexing Monitoring is affected. The banner has a link to the list of IP addresses to allow. See Monitoring IPs.

Your site setup is ready to review

Theo can propose brand terms and site sections for your domain. When the proposals are ready, owners and admins see Your site setup is ready to review. Click Review brand terms or Review site sections to open Site setup in the domain settings. Nothing changes until you review and save the proposals.

Troubleshooting

Why is a module missing from the Overview?

If a module is not set up, it has no tile. Find it in the Set up more card and click its button to connect it. If Page Monitoring is missing, add the pages that you want to watch first.

Why does a tile say "No data yet"?

The module is connected, but it has no data in the selected dates. If you set it up today, wait for the first data. If you selected old dates, select a date range that ends today in the filter bar.

Why does the verdict say "No problems found so far" and not "Everything looks healthy"?

Fewer than four modules have data. VitalSentinel does not say that everything is healthy when it checked only a few modules. Connect more modules in Set up more.

Why does a tile show "Needs attention" with old numbers?

The data source of the module stopped. Read the notice in the tile, then click its button to fix the connection. If you are a member, ask an owner or admin to fix it.

Why does the Overview show "Domain not found"?

The domain was deleted, or you no longer have access to it. Click Back to dashboard and select another domain.
