Settings

The domain Settings tabs, General, Tracking, Google Search Console, Site setup, Annotations and Danger zone, and what each field does.

View as Markdown

The domain Settings hold everything that belongs to one domain. This includes the data sources, the tracking scripts, the Google Search Console property, the site setup and the annotations.

Before you start

  • To open the settings, select a domain, then click Settings in the Domain group of the sidebar.
  • Only workspace owners and admins can open the domain settings. If a member opens a settings page, VitalSentinel sends them to the domain Overview.
  • The settings have six tabs: General, Tracking, Google Search Console, Site setup, Annotations and Danger zone.

General

The General tab has two cards: Setup and Domain verification. Look here first if a module shows no data.

Setup card

The Setup card lists the four data sources that you connect for the domain:

SourceWhat it brings
Google Search ConsoleClicks, positions and the opportunities Google reports.
Web Analytics scriptVisitors, sources and conversions.
Server Log MonitoringWhat Googlebot and AI crawlers really fetch.
RUM scriptCore Web Vitals and errors from real visits.

Each source has a status chip: Connected, Waiting for data, Not connected, Needs attention or Not on your plan. Missing sources show first.

A source that is not connected has a button, for example Connect Google Search Console or Install the script. A source that needs attention has Reconnect. A connected source has a link to its module, for example Open RUM Monitoring.

When every source is connected, the card closes to one line, "All 4 connected". Click Show to see the sources again. Otherwise the card shows, for example, "2 of 4 connected".

Domain verification card

The Domain verification card shows Verified or Not verified. Nothing is monitored until the ownership of the domain is verified.

One verification method is enough. VitalSentinel checks the method again automatically. To change the method, use Use another method. See Verify ownership.

Tracking

The Tracking tab has the tracking ID and the two tracking scripts of the domain. For the full install steps, see Tracking scripts.

  • Tracking ID: one ID for both scripts. Copy it if your site or tag manager needs it.
  • Real User Monitoring (RUM): the snippet for RUM Monitoring, with Open RUM Monitoring.
  • Web Analytics: the snippet for Web Analytics, with Open Web Analytics.

Script status chips

Each script card has a chip that shows what VitalSentinel receives:

ChipMeaning
Receiving dataThe script works.
Waiting for the first visitThe script is set up, but no visit arrived yet.
Not found on your site yetVitalSentinel did not find the script on your site.
Stopped sending dataThe script sent data before, but it stopped.
Waits for verificationThe domain is not verified yet, so VitalSentinel does not look for the script. See Verify ownership.

Script options

Each snippet has two install types. For HTML, paste the snippet into the <head> of your site. For GTM, paste it into a Custom HTML tag in Google Tag Manager. Click Options under a snippet to see its options:

  • RUM: Consent mode, Sample rate, Engagement tracking and Debug mode.
  • Web Analytics: Storage mode, Single page app (SPA) mode (Disabled, Enabled or Auto-detect), Debug mode, Do not store page titles or site-search terms and Do not store article authors.

VitalSentinel saves these options for everyone on the domain, except Debug mode, which it keeps only in your browser. The options change the snippet, not your live site. After you change an option, copy the snippet again and put it on your site. See RUM script and Analytics script.

Google Search Console

The Google Search Console tab shows the Google Search Console property card. For the full connection steps, see Search Console.

If a property is linked, the card shows:

  • Property: the linked property.
  • Your Google access: your access level in Google Search Console.
  • Linked on: the date that you linked the property.
  • Latest data: the date of the latest data.
  • Google connection: Connected, or a Reconnect button when Google no longer accepts the saved sign-in.

The card has three buttons: Open Google Search Console, Change and Remove. Change opens Change Google Search Console property, where you select a new property in Select new property.

If you change or remove the property, VitalSentinel permanently deletes all Google Search Console data that it collected for this domain. The property stays in your Google account, and you can link it again later.

If no property is linked, the card says "No Google Search Console property linked to this domain" and shows Connect Google Search Console.

Site setup

The Site setup tab tells VitalSentinel about your site. It has three cards: Brand terms, Site sections and Currency.

Brand terms

Brand terms are words that mean your own name. Searches that contain them are brand searches. Google Search Console reports use them to split brand searches from other searches.

  • To add a term, click Add brand term, enter the term, then save it.
  • To let Theo propose terms, click Suggest with Theo. Theo reads your top Google searches once. Nothing is added until you confirm. This needs Google Search Console.

If the domain has no terms, the card shows No brand terms yet.

Site sections

Site sections group your pages by folder, for example /blog/ or /products/. Reports compare the pages inside a section. Each rule has a Match type (Prefix or Regex), a Path pattern and a Section name.

The card also shows Suggested for this site, with sections that VitalSentinel found. If the domain has no rule yet, the card shows No section rules yet.

Currency

Currency sets the currency that your sales are reported in. Revenue figures in all reports use it. Select the currency in the list. The message "Currency saved" shows.

Proposals from Theo

When Theo has proposals for your brand terms or site sections, the Overview shows Your site setup is ready to review. The button opens this tab. Nothing changes until you review and save the proposals. When you save, the proposals replace the lists that VitalSentinel made before.

Annotations

Annotations mark a change on a date, for example a sale, a newsletter or a price change. Each annotation shows as a marker on the charts of the modules that you choose. The Annotations tab lists every annotation, newest first.

Add an annotation

  1. Click Add an annotation.
  2. In What happened, enter a short title.
  3. Set the Date. Optional: set the Time.
  4. Optional: in Details, enter more text.
  5. In Who can see it, select Everyone in this workspace or Only me.
  6. In Show on, select All modules or the modules that you want.
  7. Click Add annotation.

An annotation for Only me shows the Only you chip. You can also add an annotation when you click a day on any chart. If the domain has no annotation, the tab shows "No annotations yet".

Danger zone

The Danger zone tab has the Delete this domain card. Delete a domain when you no longer want to monitor it.

When you delete a domain, it leaves your dashboard at once. VitalSentinel keeps its data for 30 days, then deletes it for good. The confirmation lists the data that VitalSentinel deletes, for example the Google Search Console data, the Web Analytics visitors and the alert rules and reports.

You cannot undo the delete after the 30 days end. Download the reports that you need before you delete the domain.

  1. Click Delete domain.
  2. Read the list of data that VitalSentinel deletes.
  3. Type the domain name to confirm.
  4. Click Delete domain in the confirmation.

The message "Domain deleted successfully" shows, and VitalSentinel opens the dashboard.

Troubleshooting

Why can I not open the domain Settings?

Only workspace owners and admins can open the domain settings. If you are a member, VitalSentinel opens the Overview. Ask an owner or admin to change the setting, or to change your role.

Why does a script show "Not found on your site yet"?

VitalSentinel did not find the script on your site. Copy the snippet from the Tracking tab and put it in the <head> of every page. See Tracking scripts.

Why did my option change not take effect on my site?

The options change the snippet, not your live site. Copy the snippet again and replace the old one on your site.

Why does Google Search Console show "Reconnect"?

Google no longer accepts the saved sign-in, so no new data arrives. Click Reconnect and sign in to Google again.
